Mason Bee larva

Mason Bee cocoon

This photo of Mason bee cocoons was taken on June 22, 2004. The first-spun cocoons are a peach color. Note that there is a larva still awaiting to spin its cocoon. The speckles on the tubes are the feces. Total metamorphosis occurs within the cocoon and the bee becomes an adult by October and continues in a hibernation mode until about March or April of the next year when temperatures stay in the 55F - 60F degrees range.
