Roman Sandwich Bread

1 Pkg yeast (1-1/2 Tables) dissolved in

1-1/4 cups warm water

 

Add:

1 Tables shortening

1 teasp salt

2 Tables sugar

1-1/2 cups unsifted flour

 

Beat above ingredients for 2 minutes, medium speed or by hand 300 strokes

Add:

1-1/2 cups more flour; blend in with spoon. Cover with cloth; let rise in a warm place (85 deg) until double - about 30 min.

Stir batter down by beating 25 strokes. Spread evenly in greated 9-in square pan. Pat top in shape; brush with egg white glaze (1 unbeaten egg white and 2 tables. water); sprinkle with oregano, salt and pepper.

 

Let rise til double, about 40 min.

 

Bake at 350 deg 35-40 min
